Evaluation
This book aims at all around mastery of spoken and written Mandarin including the simplified character writing used on the Mainland and exposure to the traditional characters used in China. there are many people who want to learn Chinese would probably start with this book. But the different people learn things in different ways. Perhaps the Pimsleur style of learning a language won't suit everyone but it suits most of us.
By far the best compromise I've found that the biggest and fault of every other system of learning a language is lack of repetition. But the Pimsleur system focuses on the most important aspect of language - it's spoken. It may not be the most thorough, long term route to fluency in Chinese but, as a middle aged person, it's by far the most effective way I've found to be able to get some actual skill with the language.

3.Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar: A Practical Guide (Modern Grammars)

Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar is an innovative reference guide to Mandarin Chinese, combining traditional and function-based grammar in a single volume. It is divided into two sections closely linked by extensive cross-references, it covers:

2. Language functions and notions such as communication strategies, giving and seeking information, expressing apologies, regrets and sympathies.
With all grammar points and functions richly illustrated with examples, and a strong emphasis on contemporary usage, the main features of this Grammar include examples in simplified characters, traditional characters, and romanization (Pinyin) as well as an emphasis on areas of particular difficulty for learners of Mandarin Chinese.
Evaluation
In most if not all cases, this book is a welcome, perhaps even essential, addition to those instructional materials. The authors are clearly passionate on this subject, and have created a work that is organized, and which spans a wide array of topics expertly. On the other hand, this is the ideal reference grammar for learners of Mandarin Chinese at all levels, from elementary to advanced. No prior knowledge of grammatical terminology is assumed and a glossary of grammatical terms is provided. Featuring related exercises and activities, this Grammar is accompanied by the Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar Workbook. Arguably most beneficial for and targeted to intermediates in the language, this book will also be beneficial for one having only recently started Mandarin Chinese as well.
I found this book can offer a better organization of grammar patterns. The book is split into two sections. The first focuses on grammar patterns and the other which focuses on situational aspects of the language. These two approaches works great when learning how best to put together sentences.

Evaluation:
This book is most useful for students with no exposure to the Chinese writing system. After a clear and thorough introduction to the history and development of Chinese characters, students are introduced to 100 basic characters - a nice attainable number for the first year of high school instruction or the first semester at the university level. Each entry includes several example compounds (very important for Chinese, in which disparate characters can be combined discretely to form unexpected words) as well as nice, large boxes for practicing. While the Matthews have made a nice introduction to Chinese characters, more serious students of the language will outgrow it quite quickly.
This book really does have the characters you need to know for a basic understanding of Mandarin. I like the fact that it supplies a proper grid, gives you both stroke order and direction, and shows the radical for each character. If you're new person who want to learn Chinese, I'd recommend this book for your reference.

Evaluation:
This book covers topics such as Chinese pronunciation, grammar, common expressions and culture all in one and it's suitable for learners of all levels. It is extremely practical. The sentences and phrases introduced in this book are very useful but they are usually hard to find in traditional Chinese textbooks. While some Chinese ways of greeting are not common in real life at all and there are still not many Chinese learning books can explain that expression, but in this book, it focuses on the practicality of the language that enables the readers to put the language to use immediately after studying it.
